coom:I wonder about the last Soviet officer stationed there who was the last man to turn off the lights and walk out the gates. I wonder what was going through his mind and if he's still around to see what's become of the place that he devoted his life to.

- At these places you have to be very careful about holes in the ground, eg where inspection covers have been removed or cellar ceilings broken. I always dread a broken leg, far from any help. Bunkers are typically polluted by druggie detritus, needles and worse. The next worry is stuff that might fall from above. The third hazard is locals. Germans have this weird attitude that if its local to them they are somehow allowed into walk their dogs  (all such sites are officially forbidden), but outsiders are immediately reported to the police. The dogs are another problem, I encountered a Rottweiler bigger than I had ever seen, and I was on his territory, and he was very angry, only time Ive been scared of a dog. Near me I was again at some abandoned railway works a couple of nights ago. The overgrown location is very dangerous with barbed branches at eye level and deep inspection trenches below. I cut it short this time and went outside to sit on a bench. I seem to be losing my nerve!
